An Early 19th Century Brass Travelling Candle Holder
The circular brass base, with a central candle holder set in a shallow tray, to catch the melted wax or tallow.
Two short brass “posts” set into the pierced cover are used to locate a hooped carrying handle, which when lifted pulls a linen shield up and around the candle, to protect the flame from drafts, which may be encountered as the device is carried along gloomy unlit passageways, as the owner moves from room to room.
The proximity of the linen “shade” to the open flame of the candle makes this a very rare survivor, as many such lamps must have gone up in flames.
English, or possibly French, circa 1800.
Diameter 7.25 inches, height 2 inches, height extended approximately 7 inches.
